Heart Rate Variability measurements recorded by the Apple Watch provide valuable insights into the body's stress levels. HRV Tracker allows you to monitor short-term measurements and long-term trends, helping you understand how daily workload, exercise, and sleep affect your body's readiness, recovery, and stress levels. In simple terms, a higher HRV indicates better overall well-being.
Please note that HRV Tracker requires an HRV capable Apple Watch with watchOS 6 or later.
HRV Tracker seamlessly integrates with the Health app and utilizes data stored within it. To ensure your Apple Watch is capable of recording HRV measurements, open the Health app on your iPhone and navigate to > Health app > Browse > Heart > Heart Rate Variability.
Stay informed with HRV Tracker's notification feature, which alerts you when your HRV drops below or rises above your desired levels. Notifications are provided for individual measurements as well as your 24-hour HRV average. You can customize these notification levels directly within the Apple Watch app. Please be aware that notifications may be postponed due to low battery levels or other factors.
Use your Apple Watch for daily tracking by accessing the last seven days of HRV measurements through the digital crown. Compare these measurements to your seven-day period and individual days. Tapping on the graph allows you to toggle through the initial values for each day. Additionally, stay informed on changes in your HRV through complications on your Apple Watch.
In addition to automatically recorded HRV measurements, you can use the Breathe app on your Apple Watch to generate new HRV measurements. Simply start a Breathe session in the app, and a new HRV measurement will be available in HRV Tracker after the session ends.
Identify potential causes for changes in HRV by utilizing comparison graphs available on your Apple Watch. These include:
- Sleep hours: HRV Tracker utilizes sleep data provided by compatible sleep apps. If no sleep data is available, the app will calculate estimated sleep hours per night (this feature is only available in the Apple Watch app).
- Activity: By default, HRV Tracker uses your Active Energy (calories) as the activity metric. However, within the HRV Tracker Apple Watch app, you have the option to use a custom activity score that emphasizes daily activity intensity.
- Daily resting heart rate (RHR).
To switch between comparison graphs, simply tap the upper part of the screen.
Track your long-term HRV trend on your iPhone and compare it to your short-term measurements and all-time data. You can:
- Select a week from the weekly graph to view the daily HRV values for that specific week.
- Browse through all the daily HRV values for a selected day.
- Compare daily HRV averages to other relevant daily metrics such as Activity, Sleep (if available in the Health app), and Resting Heart Rate.
On your iPhone, enjoy widgets including a medium-sized widget with a chart displaying all daily HRV values, as well as multiple small widgets.
Your privacy is important. Data read from the Apple HealthKit database is only used to provide information related to Heart Rate Variability. Information read by HRV Tracker is stored and used locally on your iPhone and Apple Watch.
Heart rate variability measurements used by HRV Tracker are calculated by measuring the variation between individual heartbeats. Your Apple Watch automatically measures your HRV in the background and stores the data in HealthKit. SDNN heart rate variability is used, which calculates the standard deviation of the inter-beat (RR) intervals between normal heartbeats (measured in milliseconds). In addition to background measurements generated automatically by your Apple Watch, you can use the Breathe app to generate new measurements.
